9 Incredible Soundtracks That Were Almost Better Than Their Games

7. Bastion (2011)

Composer(s): Darren Korb Described by composer Darren Korb as €˜acoustic frontier trip hop€™, the soundtrack to Bastion interestingly combines both western and eastern influences in order to sustain a unique sense of otherworldliness. While the composer has credited the American frontier as a chief inspiration in his work, he certainly leaves room for other cultural influences€”including Indian, South-American and Native-American. The result is a wonderful amalgamation of differing sounds that can€™t be pinned down to one particular region or country. The soundtrack also features several tracks that wouldn't typically be associated with video games, including €˜Build That Wall€™ which features vocals from Ashley Lynn Barrett, and demonstrates Korb€™s aptitude as a powerful lyricist and thematic storyteller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLA0vB9LCTM It€™s the attention to detail that really puts the soundtrack to Bastion over the edge, the multiple layers of instrumentation and the variation of electronic drumming that persists tirelessly until the very end. It€™s dramatic, it€™s atmospheric, and it€™s very affective. Further Listening: There aren€™t many video game soundtracks that achieve the same level of acoustic variation as Bastion. The soundtrack to Diablo (1996) does shares some similarities.
