Borderlands 3 Wishlist: 10 Things That Must Happen
7. Voiced Vault Hunters
Silent protagonists have always had the same goal: let players project an identity they create onto that character. We give this a pass for more indirect protagonists like those of Dark Souls or The Legend of Zelda - games which focus more on the adventure than the protagonist - but having your character clam up in a game like Borderlands is just awkward. It's a narrative sin to prevent the Vault Hunters themselves from joining in on the uproarious banter that Pandora is known for. This has never been more prominent than in Borderlands 2: Characters like Roland and Lilith, who found their voice for their return, made Maya, Zero and the gang look like grunting mannequins. The Pre-Sequel featured voiced protagonists as well, and the atmosphere and writing of the game benefited greatly for it. Instead of groaning over the umpteenth pin-drop silence - often in the face of extremely important revelations or events - let's laugh with our characters for a change, yeah?
A freelance games writer, you say? Typically battling his current RPG addiction and ceaseless perfectionism? A fan of horror but too big a sissy to play for more than a couple of hours? Spends far too much time on JRPGs and gets way too angry with card games?
Well that doesn't sound anything like me.
