Call of Duty is no stranger to controversy.

For the most part, Activision loves grabbing headlines in order to drum up conversations around its biggest franchise, whether that's by including purposefully button-pushing levels like No Russian in Modern Warfare 2 or by having devs constantly play up how edgy and gritty the new Modern Warfare reboot is going to be in pre-release interviews.

The company seems to be all in on the idea that all press is good press, letting the fans, critics and journalists hash outrages out between them, content in the fact that even if the messaging isn't positive, people are still talking about the latest Call of Duty.

That said, there have still been times where the company has dipped its toes a little too far into hot water and gotten burned in the process. Keeping a franchise as big as Call of Duty as successful as it is for well over a decade isn't easy, and Activision has made more mistakes than most along the way that it quickly swept under the rug.
