Somehow, as if we ever really doubted them in the first place, iD Software not only nailed their sequel to 2016's revolutionary FPS DOOM, but elevated gameplay and the brand itself into truly incredible territory.
For the first time we have an expansive, enjoyable-to-lose-yourself-in lore, codifying the original games and providing a throughline "universe" for all-things DOOM. Better still, that kinetic, stay-still-and-you're-dead locomotion of the last release has become the starting point for everything here.
There's no re-unlocking your basic movement abilities or taking 20 minutes to unlock a shotgun. No, you start DOOM Eternal with a chainsaw and air-dash, quickly get access to a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, and things only get more intense from there.
By the end of the story you'll be a multifaceted killing machine looking for fresh targets to tear asunder, and although iD do a masterful job introducing new elements for close to 20 hours, there's still a ton of advice you might miss.
