Dungeons And Dragons: 10 Essential Tips For New Players
6. You Are Not In Competition With The DM
This point may be a little harder for new D&D players to get their heads around at first, but you’re also not in competition with the Dungeon Master.
Whilst the DM is in control of the world you’re playing in and is therefore in control of the hostiles you’ll come up against, this does not make them the enemy. No DM worth a damn is setting out to kill off their party. It’s their job to provide an experience that is fair to the players’ abilities, but also challenging enough to be rewarding.
Bear in mind that the DM is also the one providing this interesting new world for you to explore, the NPCs you work alongside and, of course, the sweet loot you can pick up along the way. The DM is there to keep the game running in a fair and somewhat sensible fashion. (Although it’s really fun to push the boundaries on that last point, as a player.)
You should also be weary, however, that the DM holds all of the power when it comes to your game. If you’re a dick to the DM, don’t be surprised if you come across far less loot and considerably more giant spiders.
