Thankfully though, once players know what Bethesda is working on next, it's going to quickly become apparent whether the next game is in fact a true sequel, or whether it's going to be a spin-off developed by another studio.

Although there's a benefit to leaving a franchise on ice and allowing hype to naturally mount over the years, Bethesda is still a business, and it's not smart to leave one of your biggest franchises untouched for potentially a whole decade.

Consequently, if the devs outright confirm that they're working on something original and then Elder Scrolls before Fallout 5, it all but assures some sort of spin-off in the intervening years.

They don't have to confirm it directly, but by process of elimination fans should know what the next game in the series will be by the end of 2018.
