Nintendo 3DS Breaking Sales Records

The 3Ds has officially sold 5 million copies in only 52 weeks.

Nintendoannounced today that the 3DS is the fastest selling console in the history of Japan. The 3Ds has officially sold 5 million copies in only 52 weeks, beating out the original Nintendo DS by four weeks. The original DS reached 5 million sales in 56 weeks and it took Game Boy Advance all of 58 weeks. In addition, this is even more impressive as these are actual sales figures and not just items shipped; which is the number that most game companies generally provided. Now the question becomes, since the Nintendo 3DS has picked up so much momentum can the PS Vita compete at the same level. The Vita are already off to a slow start in Japan and may need to offer a price cut similar to what Nintendo did to increase sales for the 3DS. After a tumultuous start the Nintendo 3DS is thriving in a world where many people said handheld gaming consoles were dead.
