Pokémon: Detective Pikachu Trailer Reactions - 5 Ups & 3 Downs
Wait, it might be GOOD?
The first trailer for Warner Bros.' Pokémon: Detective Pikachu just dropped to the surprise of everybody, and you know what? Even more surprisingly, it actually looks pretty damn solid.
As a first look at the CGI Pokémon and the world created by director Rob Letterman (Goosebumps), it does a great job conveying the movie's light-hearted tone and stunning visuals.
Naturally there are elements of the trailer that won't sit quite so well with hardcore Pokémon fans - especially the choice of a certain detective's voice actor - but considering the linage of video game adaptations in Hollywood, it looks like gamers might finally be getting their first ever critically fresh video game film.
Given the ease with which a project like this could go violently off the rails, this first look is extremely encouraging indeed.
Fans aren't totally out of the woods yet, but if this is truly representative of the movie's vibrant style and irreverent tone, then it should succeed both critically and commercially.
If this thing doesn't blast past $1 billion worldwide, it'd be a huge shock at this point...
