Spider-Man PS4: 5 Things It Did Better Than The Arkham Series (And 5 Things It Did Worse)
1. Citizens
This is the big one. This is one of, if not, the best things Spider-Man does better than the Arkham Series. It is a map filled with innocent, friendly, civilian citizens.
You are free to go up to any one of these people and interact with them whenever you like. Some give you a high five, some want a selfie, but all of them make the game feel lived in and gives you the motivation to want to protect them. Because of these interactions with friendly faces, it feels as though city-saving encounters have genuine lives to save. He is your “friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man" for a reason. Being able to connect with citizens gives you the great responsibility of having the great power of a hero.
Where Spider-Man has a city full of people and dangerous thugs to save them from, all the Arkham Series has are maps full of bad-guys.
Batman is a symbol of fear and doesn’t exactly spend his time taking selfies. It can get quite repetitive when all you encounter are people to fight. With that being said, this problem is always addressed in an interesting narrative way.
In Arkham Asylum you are on island housing the criminally insane. Arkham City is a walled-off section of Gotham turned into a prison. Arkham Origins is set on Christmas Eve so all self-respecting citizens are at home with their families. And in Arkham Knight, Gotham has been evacuated leaving only criminals behind.
Winner: Spider-Man
