8 Terrible Games That Didn't DESERVE Sequels

When dreadful games get sequels anyway... for some reason.

As the world of video game development becomes ever-more perilous, of course publishers want to keep building their war chests of mainstay franchises that can reliably crank out sequels every few years.

But sometimes a game is so mind-bogglingly bad you have to wonder how it possibly sold well enough for a sequel to ever be commercially viable. And yet, in the case of all these games, it still happened regardless.

These are the kind of "why-did-they-make-this" sequels that make you sob at all the unrealised sequels you'll never get to play because somebody wouldn't roll the dice on them - because the original didn't sell quite well enough.

Now in fairness, some of these sequels were actually marked, even massive improvements over the previous game and ultimately earned their keep, yet what came before was so flabbergastingly dire that it's baffling a sequel ever crossed anyone's mind.

Sure, the original game might've sold well, but that doesn't mean a game deserves to get a sequel - at least not artistically-speaking. Publisher shareholders might have a different opinion on the matter, though...

8. Hello Neighbor

Hello Neighbor is proof perfect that a quality end product is no match for a game's viral potential.

This stealth horror game, in which players attempt to sneak into their strange neighbour's basement, was widely panned on release for basically everything that wasn't the story and characters.

For all its promises of intelligent, dynamic AI, Hello Neighbor was a pure slog to play, its unremarkable puzzles and generic stealth gameplay conspiring with an abundance of bugs to sabotage any lingering promise.

Yet the viral marketing propelled it to massive sales success regardless, leading to a number of spin-off titles before Hello Neighbor 2 was finally released in 2022.

While the sequel received better reviews for its somewhat more robust gameplay, it was still an agonisingly mid experience to behold.

And yet, continually boosted by its popularity with streamers, the franchise continues to flourish commercially, with Hello Neighbor 3 currently in the works.
