10 Great Horrors with TERRIBLE Premises
9. Bride Of Chucky
Like most horror sequels, Child's Play 2 and 3 failed to recapture the magic of the original. Since the third outing supposedly killed off the psychotic doll for good, it felt like the right time to retire the franchise.
However, the Child's Play saga appeared to hit a new low when the fourth entry decided to bring Chucky back and give him a girlfriend. The premise for the original wasn't great but Bride of Chucky sounded like a parody by comparison.
But in many ways, this sequel balances horror and comedy better than any other entry. Excessive humour can undercut the scare factor, but it works in Bride of Chucky thanks to the hilarious script and comedic talents of the ensemble. There are plenty of great gags, especially when the titular villain states "it would take three or four sequels" to explain how he found himself in his current situation.
Despite all the laughs the movie offers, Chucky and his partner come across as a threat, butchering anyone who crosses their path in all sorts of inventive ways.
Hopes weren't high but Bride of Chucky ended up being a major highlight in a wildly inconsistent franchise.
