10 Great Horrors with TERRIBLE Premises

4. Tremors

Yes, "killer worms" sounds like something from a SNL sketch. However, nobody is going to deny Tremors is among the best monster movies of the '90s.

Although most creature features are let down by focusing too much on uninteresting characters, that's not the case here. The ensemble is well-developed and the actors play their roles to perfection, especially Kevin Bacon who oozes charisma in every scene.

Despite the fact Tremors leans more into comedic territory, the scenes involving the Graboids worms are tense as hell. Although the slithering beasts are puppets, the filmmakers utilise a wonderful mix of optical composition, blue screen, miniatures, subtle transitions, and reverse footage to make them look authentic.

Another reason why Tremors is surprisingly suspenseful is the fact the conventional strategies in horror don't work against these monsters. The Graboids can't be shot at due to their armoured shell. Running away is pointless, since the worms can detect movement with pinpoint precision. As a result, the only way to beat these behemoths is to study them, strategise, and adapt accordingly.

It's goofy as hell, but Tremors proves there's nothing wrong with that when done right.
