In this Silence of the Lambs prequel, Agent Will Graham is forced to work with imprisoned cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, to track down serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde.

In his research, Will learns Dolarhyde was traumatised by his grandmother, who regularly mocked his cleft lip and threatened to cut off his genitalia. As he tortured Dolarhyde, the grandmother kept uttering the words, "You disgusting beast. Do you want me to cut it off?"

When Will finds Dolarhyde has invaded his home and has his son held at knifepoint, it looks like the maniac is holding all the cards. Hoping to rattle the self-proclaimed Red Dragon, Will chastises his son, uttering the exact words Dolarhyde's grandmother used to torment him. Unable to control his rage, Dolarhyde flings the boy aside and attacks Will, giving him the chance to kill him.

Since Dolarhyde had the knife right beside the child's eye, he had the opportunity to slay him then and there, even after Will started playing mind-games with him. Dolarhyde could've slaughtered Will immediately after stabbing his son, but the trauma of his childhood meant he was easy to manipulate.
