While reflecting on the millennium's most underrated sci-fi, Pandorum often springs to mind. Upon its release, Christian Alvart's space thriller made little impression at the box office or with critics, despite being... you know... really good.

Taking place on an intergalactic ark, two crew members - Bower (Ben Foster) and Peyton (Dennis Quaid) - awaken from hypersleep, and do all they can to ensure the vessel reaches its destination. Soon after, they learn their spacecraft is infested with hostile monsters of unknown origins. After Bower discovers other crew members have woken up, he realises nothing on the ship is as it seems.

Although Pandorum starts off as a generic alien feature, it quickly proves it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Not only is it imaginatively haunting and action-packed, the film is full of jaw-dropping surprises. Just as it looks like the biggest bombshell had dropped, an even bigger twist is sprung on the viewers, catching them off-guard.

Despite having franchise potential, Pandorum's underwhelming box office returns killed any chance of a sequel. This is a shame, since it would've been amazing to see this intriguing story be explored further.
