10 More Horror Movie Openings NOBODY Saw Coming
8. Evil Dead
Although 2013's Evil Dead was a solid entry in Sam Raimi's iconic saga, it didn't receive the same praise as its predecessors. Having said that, the remake knew how to start things with a bang.
The film opens with a blood-drenched teenage girl being chased through the woods. Despite her best efforts, her pursuers capture her and drag her to their cabin, where she's tied to a pyre.
When she comes to, she's confused to see her father, Harold, standing alongside her attackers. Utterly heartbroken, Harold tells his daughter that she killed her mother. Worse still, she must be burned alive to save her soul. As he prepares to light a match, the distraught teen pleads for her life and proclaims her innocence.
Just as Harold is about to ignite the pyre, the girl innocently says, "I will rip your soul out, daddy." With no warning, she takes on a demonic form, proving she's possessed. As she curses and mocks everyone in the room, Harold sets her ablaze. Cocking a shotgun, Harold tells his daughter how much he loves her before blowing her head off.
Not only is this opening a clever misdirect, it compels viewers to treat all characters with suspicion, no matter how innocent they seem.
