In David Cronenberg's sci-fi mind-bender, TV exec Max Renn (James Woods) stumbles upon a pirate TV channel called Videodrome that depicts sadomasochistic acts. Unbeknownst to Max, the channel carries a radio signal that creates brain tumours, causing viewers to experience a higher level of reality (or it just makes them hallucinate).

As Max spends more time watching, he sees himself speaking directly to its host, Nicki, and merging with technology. Reality continues to blend with the TV world, making it impossible for Max to tell what's real anymore.

In the closing moments, Nicki shows Max a scene of himself on television embracing his "new flesh" before blowing his head off with his mutated gunhand. Max reenacts the same act, locking eyes with the camera and uttering "Long live the new flesh" before ending his life.

Based on the premise, it feels like Videodrome couldn't have ended any other way. Not only does the story deal with a fusion between fantasy and reality, the entity on the television is able to communicate with her watchers. As a result, it's fitting how the film concludes with Max talking with us, breaking through his world and into our own.
