10 Most Underrated Horror Movie Performances
2. Ted Levine - The Silence of the Lambs
In terms of brilliant horror movie performances overshadowed by their fellow cast members, there's simply no more egregious example than Ted Levine in The Silence of the Lambs.
The lion's share of the buzz was perhaps understandably lent to Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster for their performances as Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, respectively, but Levine is just as brilliant as deranged serial killer Buffalo Bill. It's an incredibly tricky part to play and Levine does a magnificent job, enough that his lack of Oscar recognition alongside his co-stars is a total head-scratcher - especially in a year with a relatively soft Best Supporting Actor line-up.
For as charming and seductive a psychopath as Hannibal might be, Bill is the other side of the coin without which the film doesn't fully work, and that's all down to Levine's sublime performance.
Though Ted Levine's work in The Silence of the Lambs is getting a tad more recognition these days, it shouldn't have taken three decades.
