10 Scariest Movies That Aren't Horror

6. The Father

It's incredibly difficult to convey the interior experience of an individual living with dementia cinematically, but director Florian Zeller did a devastatingly effective job in The Father.

Anthony Hopkins gives an arguably career-best - and unarguably Oscar-winning - performance as an elderly man suffering from dementia, which combines with the film's ingenious non-linear editing style to capture the emotional destruction caused by an individual losing grasp of their own identity.

Better than any other film on the tough subject, The Father explores both the gut-wrenching personal impact and havoc it wreaks on an afflicted individual's family. And so, Zeller would've only needed to add a few genre flourishes to make his movie a true out-and-out horror flick - though if he had, the horror-averse Academy likely would've ignored The Father completely rather than shower Hopkins with awards.

You'll probably only ever want to watch The Father once, yet considering how deeply it mines the well of existential horror, once will probably be enough.
