6. The Musical Montage - Sinners

Ryan Coogler's Sinner is one of the most ambitious vampire films ever made, a movie with so much more on its mind than its basic premise, as is confirmed no better than in its astonishing mid-film musical montage sequence.

As Sammie (Miles Caton) performs a song at Smoke and Stack's (Michael B. Jordan) juke joint, narration remarks that a few musicians are so gifted that their performances can pierce the veil between life and death, raising spirits from not only the past but also the future.

At that moment, Sammie is joined on the stage by a group of musicians and artists across time, from a DJ to an electric guitarist, an African drummer, and even a Kabuki-style dancer. It's a stunning, intentionally anachronistic sequence that culminates in a premonition of the juke joint burning down, nodding of course to the fiery finale to come.

This is a bold sequence that could've easily turned laughable with a lesser filmmaker than Coogler at the helm, but he instead delivered one of the most brilliantly, unexpectedly strange scenes of the entire year.
