10. Ray's Character Assassination - I Know What You Did Last Summer
Last year's I Know What You Did Last Summer was pretty much the hokey legacy sequel many folk thought 2022's fifth Scream film might end up being, yet its biggest crime ultimately ended up being its greatest creative risk - making O.G. hero Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) one of the new hook-wielding killers.
It was a ballsy idea in theory, yet the motivation for Ray's bloodshed - that he wanted the town to remember the original massacre which ruined his life - didn't feel particularly consistent with everything we know about him as a character.
Freddie Prinze Jr. clearly struggled to sell Ray's heel turn, resulting in an already-mediocre slasher flick going totally off the rails in the third act.
Again, it's a laudably risky move, but not one that paid off here at all, delivering an act of character assassination so outrageous and implausible that it pissed off a large swath of the series' fanbase.
