20 TERRIBLE Horror Movies That Were Huge Hits
6. Fantasy Island
A horror-themed reimagining of the hit '70s TV series Fantasy Island certainly wasn't what anyone had on their bingo card, but the potential was absolutely there.
But as this was an offering from schlock maestro Jeff Wadlow - who we'll soon be mentioning again - it wasn't remotely surprising that it was panned for its tin-eared dialogue, messy plot, and lack of scares.
However, Fantasy Island still managed to be a sizable box office success because it was a Blumhouse-produced movie, meaning its production budget was tiny and even modest returns would allow it to recoup its costs.
On a budget of just $7 million, it ultimately grossed $49 million. While hardly among Blumhouse's biggest success stories, that's nevertheless a hefty return-on-investment, especially once ancillary streaming sales are factored in.
And yet, have you heard a single, solitary soul talk about Fantasy Island since it hit cinemas back in February 2020?
