20 Things You Somehow Missed In Scream 3
12. The Nod To Wes Craven's Own Career
Wes Craven seemingly couldn't resist including some nods to his own unconventional filmmaking path, as roughly 35 minutes into the movie, Roman mentions that he's only making Stab 3 so he can graduate onto the passion project he actually wants to make. He says:
"All I ever wanted to do was make a real classic love story. And the studio said they'd let me. I just had to do a scary movie for them first."
This is widely interpreted as a reference to Craven's own unexpected foray into non-horror territory with 1999's musical drama Music of the Heart, which scored star Meryl Streep a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
However, Craven's single non-horror/thriller film only came to fruition due to the success of the original Scream, which saw Craven sign a three-picture deal with Miramax, with the director being allowed to handpick one of the films himself.
The three films ended up being Scream 2, Music of the Heart, and Scream 3, Craven sneaking his genre detour in between Scream sequels.
