10 Albums With Actual Hidden Messages

9. The Mars Volta Are Creepy As Heck

The Mars Volta do a lot of weird stuff. Rising from the ashes of Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala's previous band At The Drive-In, they swapped the hardcore punk of that band for a more esoteric, gonzo progressive rock sound €“ still plenty of shouting, but slightly more complicated chord progressions. Also each of their albums came packaged with a weird, probably made up supernatural story surrounding it. The first record was supposedly about an El Paso poet and artist who went into a coma for several years after a deliberate drug overdose, recovered and later committed suicide, the second's lyrics were taken from a diary that had been found in a repossessed car by late sound technician Jeremy Ward, and the fourth's recording was delayed after a bad experience with a Ouija board.

Like we say, probably nonsense, but fun. And a less offensive way of bigging up your band than feigning a different sexuality. Whilst the creepiness exists mainly in the album art, liner notes and press releases that accompany each album, they actually put some spooky stuff into one song. When played in reverse Eunuch Provocateur, from their debut EP Tremulant, has the messages "Have mommy or daddy ever had to spank you?" and "I'm very fond of this one about an old spider friend of mine€, followed by a rendition of Incy Wincy Spider. Apparently the recording comes from an old children's record which, given the first message, is doubly disturbing.
