10 Amazing '90s Bands That Everyone Forgot About

3. Counting Crows

As the wave of grunge started to fade, the entire rock scene started to feel a little bit burnt out. It may have been cathartic singing these songs about depression to get you through tough times, but now that Kurt was gone, it was harder to keep playing those kind of mournful tracks every day. We needed to take it down a notch, and most people found their new favorite band in what became known as adult alternative.

While we normally associate this music with acts like Train and Goo Goo Dolls these days, Counting Crows may have gotten the whole thing started back in the day with their debut, fitting somewhere between the alternative kids and the kind of classic rock bands that they loved. For all of the great tracks that landed on the rock charts, this was the kind of rock that your parents could respect, jamming out to songs like Mr. Jones whenever they came on the radio.

After this album though, people tend to only remember Counting Crows as the band that did the tie in song for Shrek 2 back in the day, when actually their back catalog is fairly solid. Going through albums like Recovering the Satellites, you can see the rootsy band that they were always trying to be, along with a more sturdy production to tie everything together. Things may have been on the gloomy side with this band, but this was where the wounds left over from grunge were starting to heal a little bit.
