5. Mazzy Star
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUPyqnn-eDg Mazzy Star were among the greatest songwriters of their generation, had the coolest frontwoman and were the modern day Velvet Underground, but for some unfathomable reason were and very much remain a cult band. The guitarist David Roback found his muse in the ethereal Hope Sandoval, who looked like a mermaid and had the voice of an angel. Her lyrics were heartbreaking, set to a country groove that should melt the hardest of hearts. They reached a modicum of success with 'Fade in to you', and whilst it is an incredibly beautiful song I've picked a different one here; the amazing 'Halah', which amazingly had her play role of a man in a heartbreaking story of doomed love. Hope Sandoval provided a beautiful vocal accompaniment on 'Sometimes Always' by the Jesus and Mary Chain, but she was so much better than that band and that's saying something. The songs that Mazzy Star conjured, and there's no other word for it, were magical - sad, resigned and beautifully melancholic. So why should they have been huge? Well for starters music that is this good needs to be cherished, this is modern soul that tells stories that are universal and every day in their detail, but beautifully epic in their scope. In an ideal world you would walk down any street and hear their timeless songs pouring out of bedroom windows on a lovely summer evening.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
