10 Bands That Broke Up For Bizarre Reasons
8. Oasis
At their peak, Oasis were one of the most dominant bands in British history, eclipsing the entire world with their overwhelming stardom and inescapable cultural presence. However, the hostilities between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher were always in the spotlight, and the only surprise of Oasis’ demise was that it took so long to happen.
Oasis formed in 1991 but didn’t gain traction until the release of their debut single, ‘Supersonic’, in 1994. Within 18 months of this, the band’s first two albums, 'Definitely Maybe’ and ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, had sold an astounding 38 million copies worldwide. All the while, Liam and Noel struggled to stay on the same page regarding creative direction, the press and touring. In one infamous incident, Noel attacked Liam with a cricket bat for bringing strangers to a recording session. In spite of all the adversity they overcame, a comparatively small obstacle was the band’s undoing.
In 2009, Oasis split up moments before they were due to perform at the Rock en Seine Festival in France, with Noel stating that he "simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer". Noel later revealed that the final straw was Liam wanting to promote his new clothing brand while on tour. Noel claimed that it was unfair to force the clothes on fans who were there for the music, and when Liam wouldn’t budge he made an immediate exit, thus bringing an undeserving ending to a truly generational band.
