10 Bizarre Songs Which Prove That The 1950s Were Crazier Than You Think

3. John Zacherle - Dinner With Drac

John Zacherle was an actor, popular radio personality, recording star, announcer and disc jockey. In 1957, when United Pictures decided to release a package made up from their library of classic '30s and '40s horror features, John was invited to host Shock Theatre on TV station WCAU in Philadelphia.

The idea was to provide a framework around which to screen the films. Dressing up as a ghoulish character called Roland, John's segments became a big hit in their own right. As part of his act, John/Roland would recited horror-limericks, and it was this that brought him to the attention of Bernie Lowe, a co-owner of Cameo & Parkway Records and which led to this memorable tale of a dinner party never to be forgotten.

John's others musical offerings include Eighty-Two Tombstones, I was a Teenage Caveman and Scary Tales From Mother Goose, each of which, for fans of the bizarre, is well worth tracking down.
