10 Famous Pop Songs You Didn't Realise Were Covers

5. I'm A Believer - The Monkees

The Monkees’ 1966 release of I’m a Believer became hugely popular both in America, where it was the biggest selling record of 1967, and internationally, topping the charts of numerous countries.

It also appeared in four consecutive episodes of The Monkee’s eponymous NBC sitcom, which only increased its popularity further.

Despite being by far the best-known version, it was originally written by Neil Diamond and appeared on his 1967 album Just for You, and has been frequently played live during his concerts over the years.

When talking about covers of I’m a Believer, it is impossible to not give an honourable mention to Smash Mouth’s 2001 effort for Dreamwork’s family animation, Shrek. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it failed to live up to the commercial and critical success of The Monkees' iconic version.
