10 Greatest Classic Rock Led Zeppelin Songs
2. Stairway To Heaven
There's absolutely no way to talk about the greatness of Led Zeppelin and not bring up "Stairway to Heaven." The song had been lauded as Zeppelin's true masterpiece with some of the finest performances from each respective member of the group. Does it deserve every one of those accolades though?
Yes, of course it does. The song doesn't even feel like a composition as much as it feels like a musical journey in a far-off land. The opening guitar part sets us off on the road, but the harder times are waiting just around the corner. As the arrangement opens up more and more, we can practically see the troubles that lay before us. When the music reaches its greatest sonic tension, we are treated to one of Jimmy Page's greatest guitar solos, which feels like a grand battle taking place right before your eyes.
Right by his side is Robert Plant, whose frequent high-pitch yelps give the listener just the right amount of energy to move on further down the road. As the acoustic guitars reenter to close everything out, the journey comes to a subdued ending as we await our long-deserved rest. After hearing "Stairway To Heaven," you almost feel like you're a changed person once you put down the headphones.
