10 Huge Artists Who Got Snubbed At The Grammys
1. Metallica
There's an unspoken rule that comes with most mainstream critics: they hate heavy metal and they hate progressive music in that exact order. So when you have Metallica making one of their mainstream breakthroughs with a prog-infused metal album like And Justice For All, they weren't necessarily going to be in the good graces of every single music magazine out there. This was the Grammys though, and it looked like things were going to turn over a new leaf with the first inclusion of a Metal Category.
Being up for Best Metal Performance, Metallica seemed to be the optimal band for the shot, given the fact that their song One was all over MTV and becoming almost the signature song in their catalog. Once Grammy night came around though, the accolade was bestowed to prog rockers Jethro Tull, who were coming off Crest of a Knave at the time.
While you can chalk this up to just the Grammys screwing up yet again, it is a trip watching Lars Ulrich deal with the fallout, like when they announce the names and you see him react in disgust when they show them. Lars did end up getting a bit of revenge in a way, as Metallica became the first metal band to perform at the Grammys and considering including a sticker on every copy of And Justice for All saying 'Grammy Award Loser.' Though Lars has not been the most likable character in rock and roll all the time, he's at least managed to keep his sense of humor through the years.
