10 Incredible Paul McCartney Songs You’ve Never Heard

7. A Love For You (Jon Kelly Mix)

This track languished in the vaults for decades before, in 2003, it found an official release on the soundtrack to the little-loved Michael Douglas comedy The In-Laws. Even then, the modest box office hit didn’t exactly do for this McCartney track what Four Weddings and a Funeral did for Wet Wet Wet’s chart conquering Love Is All Around. A Love For You remains a relative obscurity, which is a shame because it might just be one of the best things Sir Paul has ever done.

Another product of the particularly fecund RAM sessions, A Love For You was subjected to various overdubs and remixes years after it was first recorded but still seems to capture a loose vitality. Despite the tinkering, it’s as if the tracks driving bass, sprightly guitar and jangling piano were all played live together as a band in the studio.

There are also some good, pithy lyrics here and McCartney sounds like he’s having a blast singing them, “If you get me, that’ll save a thousand conversations” he opines. It’s hard not to get swept up in the song’s energy.

In 2013, an even better version mixed by engineer Jon Kelly was made available on the RAM Archive Collection edition, allowing super-fans access to a song that would be the centrepiece of lesser artists' careers.
