10 Most Underrated Metal Albums
7. Jugulator - Judas Priest
By the time Judas Priest got to the end of the '90s, their congregation had slowly started to dwindle. With the Metal God himself Rob Halford out doing solo material, the original Priest was left with soundalike Tim "Ripper" Owens, whose amazing pipes matched Halford's near perfectly. Though the fans weren't showing up as much for Jugulator, there is still that steel-plated aggression on display here.
On the surface, the riffs are still the same, with Glenn Tipton and KK Downing playing circles around one another across every other track. Despite the Halford comparisons though, the biggest strength to this album is actually Owens himself, proving that he was the right guy for the job across every single track. Being of the same screamer variety as Halford, some songs like Burn In Hell reached for some amazing high notes that many wondered if Halford himself could have delivered anymore.
So why did this tank so hard? Well, considering it was coming off of the mammoth success of Painkiller, fans were definitely not on board with a version of Priest without their head minister. Even though metal itself was suffering at the time, Jugulator remains a solid effort from one of the saviors of the genre. Halford and Priest are definitely meant to be together, but if they have to be apart, this is still more than worth your time.
