10 Perfect Rock Songs Cut From Classic Albums

4. Soul to Squeeze - Red Hot Chili Peppers

There aren’t too many fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers that will tell you that their albums are too short. Just in this past year alone, the funky monks’ creativity couldn’t be stopped, making two albums’ worth of material that went well over the hour mark both times. On their first hookup with producer Rick Rubin though, whittling the track list down meant cutting one of their all time best ballads.

When talking about which songs to cut from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Soul to Squeeze was dismissed because it sounded a little too much like Under the Bridge. You can definitely see where they’re coming from too, having a very similar mellow vibe going for it that Bridge did…only done a lot better. Although Under the Bridge has earned its spot in the legacy of the band, Soul to Squeeze might be one of the more definitive songs from this era, having a perfect melody, Anthony Kiedis detailing some of the darker sides of his life, and even that trademark Pepper goofiness towards the end of the song when Anthony just starts scat singing the last few verses.

The band did eventually come around on the song though, including it on their eventual greatest hits record after only being included on the soundtrack to Coneheads in the late ‘90s. The Peppers may have already been on their A-game during these sessions, but you have to have something amazing when the tune that makes the Coneheads soundtrack kicks ass.
