10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were INSANELY Controversial
3. Angel of Death - Slayer
When you have a name like Slayer, there's no real chance that you're looking to be the biggest rock band in the world. Since these were guys brought up in the thrash scene and sprinkled hints of death metal into the mix, this should have been reserved for only the harshest of metal circles, never coming across the radars of any concerned moms back in the day. As their album Reign in Blood started to gain traction though, people were speaking up about being offended by what they had to say in Angel of Death.
Taking a look at what went on in World War II in Nazi concentration camps, Tom Araya holds nothing back in his delivery, making every single event he talks about sound like Hell on earth. If they took the time to write something like this though, parents were convinced that this song was attempting to glorify what happened over there, with Slayer being compared to Nazi sympathizers for what they had written.
Granted, Slayer have always denied this argument, with Kerry King arguing that the words would have gone over fine if they were picked up by the History Channel and put in an actual documentary instead of a heavy metal song. Of course this song is supposed to sound like Hell on earth. If it were made any other way to sound sanitized, it probably would have made those heinous days at the concentration camp sound like a walk in the park.
