Everyone knows Prince as a remarkable stage presence with an incredible voice and killer dance moves. What often went unnoticed, however, was his proficiency at playing just about every instrument you can name off the top of your head.

When Prince appeared on American Bandstand, Dick Clark asked him how many instruments he could play, to which Prince famously responded: "Thousands."

Even though his response was delivered with a smirk, that might not even be a joke. Just from watching his live performances, we know that Prince was a masterful guitar player, and was more than capable on the piano, bass, drums, various keyboards, and harmonica.

We also know that Prince was credited with playing more than 25 different instruments on his debut, along with mixing and arranging everything himself. He's also gone on record saying that if he needed to, he'd learn a new instrument - at least well enough to play simple parts - if he wanted to include it on his next album.

Over the course of 40 studio albums, it's pretty much a guarantee that he played upwards of 100 different instruments. And as any listener can tell you, he never seemed to play any of them poorly.
