10 Rock Albums That Were Ahead Of Their Time
5. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
In the early 70's, prog music was an outlet for many bands to experiment with the traditional song format. However, for as much new ground as bands like Yes and Genesis covered, a lot of those bands' records have ended up sounding like a product of their time rather than pushing the genre forward. Some prog might be dated by today's standards, but Dark Side of the Moon may be the one prog record that knows no date.
From the production value to the pristine sonic sheen, much of this record feels like it could have been recorded last week as opposed to back in 1973. Though the pillowy soft vocals on tracks like "Breathe" put you at ease, the actual effects on display are some of the most adventurous noises to be found on a classic rock record, from the pure sonic madness of "On the Run" to the floating haze of "Us and Them."
On the lyrical front, this album has also aged insanely well, with all the meditations on greed, time, and human connection still being some of the most poignant of life's questions. Either this album refuses to age, or we haven't come a long way as a species in half a century.
