10 Rock Songs With Horrible Backstories

3. Polly - Nirvana

There's no real reason to pay too much attention to half of Nirvana's lyrics.

Aside from not being able to hear what Kurt Cobain was actually saying during takes, one of the biggest bands of the '90s was more about the feeling that the music gave you rather than the words in between.

When Kurt actually stepped up to say something though, you start to remember just how dark the grunge scene could really be.

Instead of just making your simple song about being disillusioned, Polly is a real story about a torture scene that Kurt had read about in the local newspaper.

According to what he had read, a woman was kidnapped outside of a concert in the Seattle area and was tortured by a sexual predator, only managing to get away when she started to flirt with him and having him let his guard down.

Being equally disgusted and inspired, Kurt makes an odd choice in the lyrics and actually takes on the role of the torturer, sounding almost desensitized to the kind of heinous actions that he's doing. With no real drums and made up of just guitars and voice, this song gets about 10x more creepy once you know what it's about.

This is a man that is numb to all the pain that he's causing and just sees it as a habit at this point.
