Last week, the rock world lost one of its legends: Rush drummer Neil Peart. Over 40 years, Peart built up a reputation for being one of the greatest drummers to ever pick up two sticks, with his brilliant use of unconventional rhythms and impeccable dexterity. Along with guitarist Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, Peart helped construct some of the most inventive rock music of the 20th century. Even from behind the kit, Neil's percussive style was as essential a songwriting factor as the guitar, bass, or keyboard.

When not dominating the drums, Neil also served as the primary lyricist of the band, penning tales of epic journeys often influenced by works of fiction. His great wordplay and broad vocabulary made him one of the most intellectual lyricists of the 70's. One minute you could be a trip through Middle Earth, but the next minute there would be a line that could have been written by Dylan or Cohen. While the drumming showed Neil as a musician, the lyrics reflected who Neil was as a person.

So this list is a look back through some of Neil's highlights during his time with Rush. Thanks for everything Professor!

10. Anthem

For lists like this, it's best to start at the beginning. After a Led Zeppelin-inspired debut, Rush acquired Neil after original drummer John Rutsey had to leave the band due to health concerns. As the first track on Neil's first Rush record, he made his presence known from the very beginning.

The song chugs along on an insistent shuffling beat as Neil commands his drum throne with great precision. This opening track also marks the debut of Neil's lyrics, which are inspired by the book of the same time by author Ayn Rand. To say that this was a change of pace for the band is a definite understatement. After a record of boogie-woogie songs about love and work, this record showed that Rush were moving on to much bolder musical territory. The lyrics may have been a touch more complex, but the music was so damn good that you couldn't help but go along with it.

Even as the newcomer, Neil made sure that he earned his spot as a member of Rush. With Neil becoming the band's secret weapon, more greatness was sure to follow.
