10 Songs Everyone Misunderstood As Kids
4. KISS - Detroit Rock City
For every 10-year-old kid in the 70's and beyond, KISS is always one of the bands that gets the younger demographic into rock and roll. Not only were these guys playing loud metallic rock, but their look with black and white makeup made them appear as modern rock superheroes.
With the release of "Detroit Rock City," many hardcore KISS fans probably thought the song was simply about the band proclaiming their love for one of the cities that helped break them in the U.S. On the other hand, songwriter Paul Stanley used the opportunity to put a more twisted bent on the rock narrative. The song is told from the perspective of a young kid who is driving to a concert after having drank at a party beforehand.
While trying to speed through traffic to get to the venue, our protagonist veers off the road only to die by colliding head-on with a truck. The death of the singer might be pretty gruesome, but the unstoppable nature of the riff and spellbinding guitar solo make the song feel like a genuine rock tunesfest. It may be fun to headbang to, but this cautionary tale may be much more grim than you remember.
