10 Ultimate Ska Anthems

8. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – “Someday I Suppose”

Formed in 1983 in Boston, Massachusetts, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were one of the earliest bands to come out of the third-wave ska scene, with their influential blending of ska and hardcore punk, affectionately dubbed “ska-core”, being key to the development of the genre.

First released on their Ska-Core, the Devil, and More EP, and re-released on their 1993 album Don’t Know How to Party, the single “Someday I Suppose” is a humorous description of an uninterested, lackadaisical approach to life, sung in the forced, gravelly voice of frontman Dicky Barrett. In their trademark ska-core style, the song manages to seamlessly merge gruff, punk vocals and a hard rock chorus, with a deep, groovy bassline and a thundering brass section.

The music video for “Someday I Suppose”, featuring all eight, suited and booted band members larking around Boston, as well as their performance of the song in the cult teen flick Clueless (1995), massively increased the bands exposure to the MTV crowd.

With the infectious beat of songs like “Someday I Suppose”, and the onstage “skanking” of their full-time dancer, sometime tour manager Ben Carr, along with their decision to hold an annual Hometown Throwdown festival, The Bosstones have helped cement their reputation as a top party band, whether they meant to or not.
