20 Greatest Empowering Break-Up Songs

12. Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles

The History: This song was originally recorded by Percy Mayfield, but it didn't land on the map until Ray Charles covered it with Margie Hendricks. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed in that spot for two weeks, which make it his sixth number one on that chart.

Why it's Great: Ray Charles is a musician where one could say all of his songs are good and you don't need to justify their greatness. However, what makes this track so special is that it does something that most break up songs don't, which is give you both sides of the story.

Charles assumes the role of the man who isn't good for anything. The back and forth between him and Hendricks is great. It leaves the rest of us pretending Charles's part is our ex so we can scream €œ"Hit the road, Jack!"€ at them.
