10 Most Insane Stories Stephen King Ever Dreamt Up

4. Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher is otherwise known to Stephen King fans as "the one about the s--- weasels." If that doesn't convince you that it's completely insane, consider that one of the main characters turns out to be a young boy (Duddits - later seen grown up) with downs syndrome who happens to have psychic powers, powers that sort of rub off on a group of friends who save him one day from a gang of bullies. Later in life, they wind up at the centre of an alien invasion where the aliens are basically extraterrestrial mold and worms that infect humans, at least until the fully grown worm - now a s--- weasel - exits the host's body. Through the back door. To add to the insanity. the military gets involved in stopping the invasion, and opt to put a guy named Kurtz in command. Because that always goes well. The movie version isn't any less crazy. With Jason Lee and Thomas Jane involved, you'd at least hope for an improvement on the novel, but then Duddits - played by Donnie Whalberg - turns out to be an alien himself, for some unknown reason, and the whole thing goes off the rails. In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, King would say of the novel "I don't like Dreamcatcher very much" and add that the book was written under the influence of Oxycontin while he was recovering from being hit by a car.
