Another non-American but someone who was hugely popular in the USA and so was monitored by the FBI for supposed Communist sympathies was British actor and film director Richard Attenborough. Best-known for his roles in Brighton Rock, The Great Escape and Miracle on 34th Street, the man who loved to call everyone "darling" was a dedicated leftist. Attenborough joined the British Labour Party in 1945 and explained in 2005 that he had voted for them at every post-war election, and that he had harboured socialist sympathies in the past. Such was the FBI's concerns that Attenborough was one of the hundreds of actors they feared of being a Soviet agent due to the fact he had shown some leftist leanings, he was added to the Hollywood blacklist in the early 1950s and denied employment.
