President Franklin D Roosevelt had helped lead the USA to victory in World War II and also dragged the entire nation out of the worst Depression they had ever seen - yet McCarthy and other conservative politicians still labelled FDR's "New Deal" as "Communist" and a "Red plot". Believing that FDR was heavily influenced by Communists and socialist sympathisers during his time in office, McCarthy exaggerated the similarities between a social-security system in the US and Joseph Stalin's regime in the USSR throughout the 1940s. If Communists really had infiltrated the government to the extent that they were controlling the President, then Americans certainly should have been worried. Somehow though, it appears McCarthy's claims were a little bit of an exaggeration to say the least...
