10 Authors With Out Of Control Drug Problems

4. Hunter S. Thompson (1937- 2005)

WikipediaWikipediaDrugs of Choice: Everything Gonzo journalist Hunter S Thompson wrote his infamous 1972 book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas about a road-trip he had taken in 1971. In it, Raoul Duke, his alter-ego protagonist sets out with 'two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls.' It was considered 'by far the best book yet written on the decade of dope' by The New York Times, and if Thompson's apparent daily routine is to believed, the list is unlikely to be far removed from the truth. Biographer E. Jean Carroll€™s documented the writer's average daily itinerary as a constant indulgence in cocaine and his daily routine incorporated cannabis, LSD and sleeping tablets.
