Listen: there is NOTHING graceful about a grenade and there's nothing discreet about it. A grenade is a loud, thunderous weapon, meant to deal extreme, indiscriminate damage to anything and everything around it. In a zombie apocalypse, that's a good thing AND a bad thing.

On one hand, it's loud. You'll attract more zombies than you kill, which is the opposite of what you want. On the other hand, though, you can do considerable damage to three, four, or five zombies at once - maybe even more, depending on what sort of explosive you're using and how closely-packed the zombies are. The main goal is to kill a zombie. If you can't do that, you'll have to settle for dismembering and immobilizing it, which is where grenades come in. Though they should be used sparingly, they can clear a path for you when you're overwhelmed or in a pinch.

Plus, it's better than a heavy, fuel-dependent flamethrower, which does nothing but burn zombies that can't feel the heat, anyway. What are you gonna do? Burn their skin off? THEY DON'T HAVE SKIN, ANYWAY!
