An unassuming high school teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine in 2009, Jake Epping is recovering from a recent divorce from his alcoholic wife. Passive by nature, Jake is thrust into a chaotic world when his friend Al Templeton confides in Jake that he has stumbled upon a portal that allows him to travel back in time €“ to September 9, 1958, at precisely 11:58 a.m. At first Jake is dubious, but after spending an hour back in 1958, he realizes the truth. However, Al has a greater task in store for Jake €“ travel back once again to 1958 and stop Lee Harvey Oswald from assassinating President Kennedy. Over the span of the next 4 years, Jake sets up shop in the past, under the identity of George Amberson. He becomes a respected citizen and teacher in Jodie, Texas, and meets and falls in love with the girl of his dreams, Sadie. All the while he keeps close tabs on Oswald and his movements. The resulting effect of the dual life causes Jake to become obsessed with his task at hand while he yearns for normalcy with Sadie. As the date of the assassination approaches, he must choose to save the most powerful man in the world from certain death, or be with the woman he loves.
