10 Most Bizarre Japanese Trends

1. Eyeball Licking

I'm going to start this entry by telling you what was initially reported by worldwide media outlets. The reports all contained the same basic message; Japanese teenagers have taken up a dangerous craze which involves licking each other's eyeballs as a sign of affection. This was reported to be causing several health issues, including conjunctivitis and scarring of the cornea. Of course, as is often the case with media reports, this analysis was 95% nonsense. The source material for these nonsense articles was taken from a Japanese tabloid, which sited it's source as a completely anonymous schoolteacher.....seems legit. Eyeball licking is not a trend in any way, and there has been no rise in eye-related illnesses, according to interviews from several Ophthalmologic organisations. A possible source for the original rumours could be this video, titled "Spiral Lie" and performed by Japanese rock band "Born". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw4AHVNHahI It's interesting to note that the worldwide media outlets are happy to believe that just about anything is a Japanese trend. Perhaps it's a reversal of the "Boy who cried wolf" effect. Japan has had so many insane crazes to date that just about anything seems feasible these days.
