7. Café Neko, Vienna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKzwg7_psKs Austria is taking a leaf out of Japan's book - or should that be a whisker from its cat basket - with the opening of Europe's first 'cat cafe' in Vienna. For those who love cats and coffee Café Neko is the ultimate destination. The café, named after the Japanese word for cat "Neko," serves a standard café menu of drinks and small bites while several cats roam freely around the room. The purpose of the café is so that people who cant own pets can come in and interact with the animals while they enjoy a cup of coffee. Like the name, the concept of feline cafés comes from the land of the rising sun. The cafés owner, is originally from Japan where there are now around 40 such establishments in Tokyo alone since the first cat cafe opened in 1998. Neko has to adhere to strict guidelines to stay in business. All dishes are served with a cover, and there is a strict no cats policy in the kitchen and stockroom. The owner of the café even had to attend a class on animal husbandry. The menu is plain; guests can choose from five different kinds of coffee and tea and pick one of three home-made cakes, ice cream or rice snacks, all moderately priced. For 1 ($1.39) one can also order tidbits for the four-legged friends as a bait to lure them to the table. The five cats currently residing at Café Neko; Moritz. Luca, Mome, Sonia and Thomas are all rescued from the Vienna Animal Shelter. As it says on the door, café Neko has a strict no dogs policy.
