10 "Bucket List" Tourist Attractions That Are Totally Overrated

2. Times Square - New York City, United States

Back in the day, Times Square was named as such because of the New York Times building that was the focal point of the growing commercial area. A fitting name. But if we wanted to give it a fitting name in 2014, The Scourge of Humanity might be more apt. Seriously, there's a reason why every New Yorker hates Times Square with a passion and does everything they can to avoid it in their day to day life. It smells awful, there's nothing of cultural merit for blocks, everything is expensive, and you will literally be tripping over tourists who stop at the worst possible spots (ie the middle of a busy intersection) to take the perfect vacation photo. It makes absolutely zero sense that with the wealth of options there are in New York City, that people insist on going to the worst place on Earth. If you're interested in buying Hershey chocolate for quadruple the price or you really want to see giant advertisements for perfume, sure, Times Square is probably a good fit. Otherwise, go pretty much anywhere else. Spend an hour or two strolling through Central Park, where you can explore Belvedere Castle and check out the free jazz concerts that are frequently held during the summer.
